I look at these things posted on the Mythology & Folklore catagory and think, what in the world is this crap? Do you really believe in these things or are you high? Seriously, someone exlpain to me, a conservative Christian, what this stuff means to you. Is it a religion? Is it an obsession like from Star Wars or Harry Potter? ( I know some of you live for them too) Some of it I understand but some of it looks like gibberish to me. I'm not willing to explore Satanism, Wicca, pagan beliefs or any cults because I've been there and my faith calls those things lies. Other than that, tell me what you're thinking.

Serious answers only please! I really wanna know!

I'm not upset at these questions, I just don't get it.

Thanks for trying, Eagleflyer.

And I don't want explainations from the cults I've listed because I won't believe you. But I know there has to be more to these things than cult belief systems, that's what I'm asking for.

Here's an example...
" wat is the meaning of the name VINOTH???
give the meaning in sanskrit, hindi, hindu religointic even may in any language or relegion.... "

...is this even a question? What about "star people"?

I guess I need to get down from my "high horse" of having the nerve to ask an unpopular question and realize it's all crap. That's why it's under mythology & folklore, right? Yeah for me! I get 10 points for the best answer! lol

I'm afraid only your question sounds "weird", as it is relating to nothing, regarding "Mythology & Folklore".

Your admittance that you are christian really does not surprise me, as having been one myself, I know it is frowned upon by your betters to be open-minded about other possibilities.

What you fail to realise, is that many of the people who use this site are children. Remember that next time you flame someone for asking "are unicorns, etc real?"

The self admitted fact you are not willing to explore other ways of thinking, a necessary requirement for an open mind, is a testament to your ignorance, I'm afraid. As for you telling us you have tried them before...erm, does not your new belief consider lying a sin!??? You are actually attempting to make us believe you have been a Satanist, a Wiccan AND a pagan(pagan, btw, simply means "country dweller, or non-christian...no religious beliefs needed)? Hmmm...

Asking questions regarding a subject does NOT mean someone "believes" in that subject! How old are you!? Don't you KNOW that!??? It simply means the questioner is interested in it!

You are either a very "new to it" christian or are extremely bigoted and narrow minded to the rest of the world.

Just remember - there are CHILDREN on this site. CHECK your attitude.

It looks like you need to read the bible...

Serious answer:

You wrote, "I'm not willing to explore Satanism, Wicca, pagan beliefs or any cults because I've been there and my faith calls those things lies."

Since you have made up your mind, and don't want input, why ask any questions, and why bother reading others answers.

You also wrote, "someone exlpain to me, a conservative Christian" and that also indicates that you have no need for discussion.

Question to you is this: other then wanting to start a fight, why did you ask?

*****

Further note: You really are on a roll, aren't you. Other then bashing everyone who does not go along with your own mythology, what is your point?

Here's something for you Jesus said he was "The Way, The Truth and The Light." Right? Okay ... so did Mithra in 600 BCE, and so was Hours of Egyptian antiquity so long ago that in the Egyptian old kingdom, he was consider one of the Old Gods. Many of the stories associated with Jesus are similar to Krishna, and Buddha and they predate Jesus by some 2000 years.

Yes, your question sounds really wierd to me. You have asked for answers but only those that agree with your beliefs. You put down others religions as being lies and compare them to fantasy movies or as being drug induced. If you are unwilling to explore anything, then why are you here? All mythologies were at one time religions. They all start out as cults, take on popularity, then fade when the next myth takes hold. This has happened over and over throughout history and I'm sure will happen again. One day your religion will be known as mythology as well. It already is by many people. If you really want to read some gibberish, then take a look at what conservative christians write in response to legitimate questions on this board. You can also reread your own question.
This "stuff", as you put it, is our heritage. It is our history and in some cases, hopefully, our future. Open your mind and you may actually learn something.

Okay, a serious answer. One person's mythology is another's gospel. To me, western religion is just another myth. There is no more proof of "god" than that of Zeus's existence. Or Poseidon's. Or Ra, although Ra (the Egyptian sun god) makes more sense. After all, the sun is the giver of life. I think the great Indian horse culture of North America had some pretty cool concepts about the mysteries of the forces of the universe. But it's all just dreams. As a reductionist, I think things work just fine and dandy without some concept of "divine" intervention. Do you enjoy color TV? Thank scientists for figuring out something that deep and complex, involving quantum indeterminacy. If you can find "god" in that, you would have to worship "light." It has been said that god is light. God is love. Such phenomena as these that exist in our universe that are worthy of awe and respect. A lot more interesting than smiting the Sodomites or begetting the begats. You probably won't like this answer because it is automatically discarded by your belief parameters. Love and blessings to you anyway. Peace.

People ask these questions for a variety of reasons. Some do it for research. Literature classes around the world ask a lot of questions regarding myths and folklore, particularly Greek and Roman mythology. Lack of knowledge of such can prove extremely detrimental to grades, and in intellectual circles, a lack of knowledge of such things may imply that one has not been educated properly.

This is the case not only in literature, but also in such fields as history and the visual arts. Some historians have posited that myths are merely retellings of actual historical events, or perhaps an attempt by ancient civilizations with no knowledge of science to explain certain phenomena. An understanding of myths and folklore often gives students a better grasp of how the people of an ancient civilization perceived the world around them.

As for the visual arts, many works of art make references to mythology. Many of the most beautiful paintings from the Renaissance period and beyond often incorporated themes and symbols from myths, some of them even seeping into religious artwork. Someone with a grasp of mythology will be able to see these references, and hence gain a better understanding of the meaning behind a particular painting or sculpture.

Most of the time, though, I believe that people do it for the sake of curiosity. Mythology and folklore - regardless of the culture from whence it comes from - is always a point of fascination for many people, and usually leads them down other avenues of intellectual exploration. Literature and history are merely the most obvious. Whether or not these same people accept the myths as religious fact is a different notion entirely, which makes it their business, and no one else's.

I think that wanting to know more about mythology and folklore - which is, I suppose, the point of asking questions about them - is a sign of a healthy, active mind that aims to expand horizons and an understanding of not only oneself, but also of the people surrounding oneself. As I said, the inquiring mind need not believe in them as if they were religious truth in order to enjoy them.

I am a Christian, and I grew up in a Christian household, and yet my mother gave me an illustrated edition of Homer's Odyssey when I was ten years old - accompanied by my first Bible. Since then I have enjoyed reading about not just Greek and Roman mythology, but mythology from other countries and cultures as well. It has made my life and my understanding of the world even richer than if I had gone through life without encountering them at all, but in the midst of it all I have held on firmly to my faith.

In the end, I suppose, myths are just stories as long as one does not attach any religious significance to them. And who does not enjoy a good story?

My my my, I thought we tried to stamp out the zealots in here.

If you have no better wasteof points to ask this then its obvious you must be lonely, bored. perhaps you should be out looking after your three kids, rather than abusing the people on here.

Look at the tone of your question, wanting serious answers then not accepting then from the ones most likely to be tolerant enough to deal with your answers.

Now then, either you want a serious answer which means practiscing the humility you preach, or you don't.

If you want a completely serious answer, message me, but try eating some humble pie and apologising to the nice people on M&F

Let's see....you want answers and explanations, yet you are not willing to investigate anything that even looks like a source of answers or investigations because "you've been there"? If you've been there, wouldn't you *know*? And aren't you kinda setting would-be answerers up by saying that certain religions are "lies"? You say their adherents are "liars" or "believers in lies", too.

It looks like gibberish because your mind is too hermetically sealed to even try getting it. I know I'm being rude, but you've given me no reason to expend any real effort on this.

Of course you know most of these questions are fictitious and the people are only trying to get points or get a rise out of people. You are really getting too upset over fantasy and escapism. If the questions bother you so, why do you bother with them? To each his or her own and that's the simple truth.

If you truly are a conservative christian than you've sinned by exploring this topic. Just as Harry Potter and Star Wars are tools of the devil so is this category.
I will pray that you overcome your temptation to return to "what" you were delivered from, and that God does not address your high and mighty condemning attitude....Bless You
