Why would you deal with a Homeowner's Association? Please give me your reasons for paying $150,000+ for a house and letting some douchebag tell you what you can and can't do with it.

That crap don't fly with me. I bought it, I own it, I decide what to do with it.

I'll say this I live in a crappy neighborhood. I was the first to fix my place up on the block. A few have followed suit now. Property values have gone up. It just takes one to set a good example and the others will follow. People do not need someone forcing them to live any different than they wish to.

Most of this HoA stuff appeared less than twenty years ago. People bought then for the same reasons that they continue to buy now, which is that they would rather pay $150,000 for a house instead of $350,000+. Also they would rather get less in terms of what they can do with their property but live closer to where they work and afford a safer neighborhood than they otherwise could. Some people use it as a starter house and then cash in on the equity thats been built to buy the kind of house they really wanted. Even stateing those reasons, I still agree with you! For me it's not worth it, but that's just me.

The middle class in the USA now includes many people who don't happen to share the middle class values of precision-clipped lawns, harmonious exteriors, and enhancement of property values.

When these culture clashes take place, the Homeowner's Association enforces the traditional value set.

Got it?

Because it is a cheaper way to live than buying and owning your own house, but you are right. You had better read that contract really closely or have a lawyer do it before you sign up. Sometimes bad things happen like sudden large bills for a new roof or something like that and it maybe unmanageable unless you know what the liability is in the contract. Good Question.

I refuse...one year ago we went househunting...the realtor showed us fine homes in HOA's...I told her no thanks...

Our second day out with her, she showed us homes further out, no HOA's....we purchased a brand new home....and 3 weeks ago I painted my door burgandy....and didn't have to get permission to do so....

My sister in law landscaped in front of her townhome and got a letter from her HOA that said, "Although your work and effort falls within the 'community' guidelines. You are hereby fined $20 for not seeking prior approval."

HOA's had a good purpose to start (keeping abandoned cars out...keeping grass below 2 ft...)...but are now awful....I would live in a tent before I lived in a HOA neighborhood.

$150,000 isn't sh*t. I couldn't find a condo around here for that cheap. I'd pay $1 mil at least, get something quality... but honestly, I'd probably just splurge and get something BANGIN.
