Examine at all the wiring. Especially the wiring going from the motherboard to the front panel. If you see a molten mass of wire then a wire got pinched to case. There's no guarantee that no permanent damage has been done.

Usually if there is smoke there is an electrical cable or wire involved, and the insulation material on the wire got burnt by an electrical short or surge. I would tend to think there is a fan involved, either the case fan in back or the power supply fan.

Sounds like it shorted out. Sure hope you unplugged it and don't try to use it again. Either pitch it inthe trash or take it to repair shop and pay mucho dinero to get it fixed. If it can't be fixed and if you buy a new computer, the shop could copy your files on your hard drive over to the new one.

Monitors can do the same thing.
If it's the monitor, it's cheaper to buy a new one than repair it if it could be repaired at all.

Here are some possible reasons:
1. a power surge has occurred and it fried your PSU.
2. a foreign conductive/metalic material caused a short circuit somewhere inside your PC.
3. there's moisture accumulation inside(water, insect/animal urine)
4. damaged insulation in your power cables that caused the short circuit

i hope this helps...

Something fried somewhere buddy, check your cards individually to see, if you don't find anything, most likely the motherboard, which wouldn't be good. Highly unlikely a hard drive or something electrical sparked. I'd start at the installed cards.

It could be a lot of things. Unplug it and get it to somebody who knows what they are doing. Letting it run could cause an electrical fire and further destroy components.

Overheating, one possibility. Shorting, another. Have the machine checked up for faults, 'asap'.
