Check out "The Great Raid." I am into history... and was disappointed in myself for having NOT known this story.
Also, "The Big Red One" with Mark Hamill
"The Best Years of our Lives" is a marvelous 'post war' movie.

The Movie "Glory" was an absolute masterpeice on the civil war and touched you on so many levels. I still think it's one of the best war epics of all time and had great acting like that of Denzel Washington, Mathew Broderick and Morgan Freeman. There is no way you can watch this movie and not feel. It's a very powerful film and goes beyond just the war, but puts you in the shoes of the characters and allows you to see through their eyes and feel through their hearts.
Just the best!

Das Boot (The Boat)
German language movie about a U-Boat crew.
Makes you realize the horrors of war are universal and effect your enemy as well. Also, its not pretentious or preachy like alot of American movies, it lets the subject tell about the fear and terrible nature of war rather than have Tom hanks/Charlie or Martin Sheen monologue about how war is bad over and over.

I would have to say that it would be BIRDIE- starring nicholas cage.
This movie touched me deeply:a young man somewhat lost in a fantasy world due to his love of birds, pushed over the edge and left
mentally scarred after returning from active duty and the love of his best friend desperately trying to save him fom a life of institutionalization. The ties that bound them, then nearly broke them-finally gave his friend the courage and will to change and step outside of the prison w/in.

So many affect me differently. Sands of Iwo Jima reminds me of my father. It always makes me cry. The Green Beret that reminds you that it's the people that they're fighting to protect. And To Hell and Back. Audie Murphey was a very great American.

A Thin Red Line. You really need to watch it as everyone i know has gotten something different from the movie. I got that even though soldiers have a duty to our country and when told to kill, they have to, they always wish to go back to the "innocence" that was knwn before war.
