first you add up the total amount spent.
8 spent 12 Rs (whatever that is), so you multiply 8x12=96,
Then you add in the 9th person's cost of 8. 96+8=104; that's the total money spent.

Divide that by the number of people 104/9=11.555555, or 11.56Rs each on average

If the ninth spent $x, then average of all 9 is (12*8 +x )/9 so (96 +x)/9 +8 = x so 96 +x +72 = 9x giving 8x = 168 which means that x = 21, so the total spend is 96 +21 = 117

Given the condition, say the 9th person spent Rs. X

so the average of 9 people is (8*12 + X)/9 and Rs.8 extra than this is (96+X)/9 + 8 and that is what the 9th person spent

so we have the equation

(96+X)/9 + 8 = X

Or, (96+X)/9 + 72/9 = 9X/9

Or, 96+X+72=9X

Or, 168 = 8X

Or, X = 168/8 = 21

so total money spent is 96+21 = Rs. 117 and average spending is 117/9 = Rs. 13

Now 21 - 13 = 8 as described in the condition in the problem .. thus solved .... cool :)

Meals For Eight

2016-12-11 17:12:28 · answer #4 · answered by days 4 · 0 0

8 people spent Rs.12 each on their meals
Ninth person spent Rs 8 more than the average expenditure .
Let y be the average expenditure.
Then the ninth person paid (y+8) for his meal.
Now Average Expenditure i.e. y = ((12*8)+(y+8))/9
hence Average Expenditure i.e. y = 13.
Hence the ninth person paid (y+8) = 13+8 = Rs.21
Hence the total amount paid by them = (12*8)+21 = 117.
The answer is they totally paid Rs. 117

consider average of their expenditure as x

then, Average=x=total money/9

therefore ,12*8+(x+8)=9x

8x=104

x=13

therfore,9x=9*13=117rs
