Funny thing though- you're wrong!
The sound you hear is not blood flowing through your head- it's whatever noise is around you that does it. It works because of the sea shell's unique accoustic shape- almost any background noise is transformed into that hiss of waves crashing. That's why it won't work in a silent place.
About the only time you CAN hear your blood flowing is if you press the palms of your hands against your ears. You'll hear a dull rumble.
