Congrat's on the job! I'd suggest something that is wider than it is deeper (an 'east-west' bag), that is made of a durable material, has three distinct main compartments (zippered middle), with interior slots for cell phone, keys, etc.
The main compartments should be large enough for papers and files, and a moderate size text book. Be sure the shoulder strap is comfortable and the bottom has protective feet. I prefer Maxx totes in nylon. I've yet to misplace any English papers!

Part of me wants to say you should just use any bag you like that holds what you need to carry. Another part of me understands your wanting to know what's appropriate in a situation so new to you. I'm sure you'll get a sense of what's appropriate as early as the first day of school. Meanwhile buy a bag you like that's big enough to hold at least 3 stacks of 35 sheets of printer paper (like what you might need to take home to grade). Just be sure to get something in a style you like, so that you can use it for other things if you find something better later.
As a private tutor, I carry lots of different bags for different students. (They almost serve as a filing system.) Some are heavy, some are light, some are funky/casual, some are business formal. The only things they have in common are that a) I like them and b) they hold 8 1/2 x 11 size paper.
Good luck in your new job!

Perhaps, a soft leather briefcase with an over the shoulder strap. It's casual enough that it doesn't need to be carried all the time, but slim enough to carry all your paperwork in an organized fashion. Here in Canada, 'Business Depot' or 'Staples' carries one with a couple of front pockets for smaller items. It's a similar design to what used to be called a 'Satchel',...specifically meant for school use. Halfway between a backpack and a briefcase.

I know some teachers that carry backpacks. I use a big quilted bag because I already look young enough and I want to not look like a student.

Any pack you find convenient and comfortable. I know of a lot of teachers that carry backpacks. If you have a lot of materials, consider a little cart.

Have you seen the book bags that look like huge purses? They hang to the side of the body..and it is rectangular. They have those that are nicer looking. You may also look for a tote bag.

I'd use the backpack! It's comfortable why not?! Besides your students will love that you have one too. It'll show that your down to earth. I know a few of my teachers had one.

a wide shoulder / body bag
since you'll be having a lot of papers to work to, try it. try something that has compartments inside. so that the papers you'll check won't get folded and big enough for a plastic folder to fit in. choose a durable one since you'll be moving a lot during classes. try to also choose those with a lot of pockets. so that you can put a lot of stuffs in it.
good luck on your career.
