I like fanfiction that is very true to the original character. When you read the piece you think, "Yes! That's exactly what so-and-so would say in the books!" or "That's exactly what so-and-so would do!"

I would like to read something that makes perfect sense, even if the fanfic author wants to add a new character (I've read only one good fanfiction with new characters whose existence seemed logical). Situations alike the ones Rowling creates, with some thinking expected from the reader, some mystery to be solved and action mixed with a relaxing bit of humour. Take Cassandra Claire's "Draco Dormiens" (I know it's a trilogy but I only liked the first one) for example. That's a good fanfiction :)

More insight into the workings behind the Ministry of Magic, i.e. what is the purpose behind teaching the ways of magic, and of course plenty of room for political intrigue.
And on a less serious side-, more Weaselys family interaction-history and lots more Remus Lupin!!
There is such a wealth of HP fan fiction out there, you have your work cut out for you! ( that is if you are intending to write it, if so best of luck )
