I've written 16 songs and some has music to them, some does not. I'm a decent singer and I think I would own the stage if I had a chance to give it a go. I think that if I did put them out there that some how someone would take them and screw me out of what was owed to me. That is if they are good enough. I'm not getting any younger and I'm afraid that if I did'nt do it, I would regret not at least trying. I would really like some good honest help with this matter. Please only reply if you really know what you are talking about. Thanks.

Jake & I wrote a lot of stellar blues pieces, but we did not have the scratch to pay for copywriting. Our agent, Marty Sline, informed us that anything that you write is automatically protected by U.S.copyright laws. When people spend money to file their work with the Library of Congress, that is mainly for legal proof that you were the originator of the work. Marty tells me that there are millions of unfiled documents at the Library of Congress and to save your money.

He had us mail our blues tunes to ourselves as Certified Mail, Return Receipt requested. My court-appointed attorney said the letter will stand up in court. You young people today can use the internet the same way to prove you were the first to pen a tune.

Jake and I were never too good at hitting the books, so the Penguin has taken care of our copyrights and royalties over the years. She hooked us up with B.M.I., which moniters air play and sends us a check every month on estimated plays of our songs. A.S.C.A.P. is another service that does the same thing.

Good luck on your writing. If you are ever in Calumet City, stop by and we'll do some jammin'.

Try MySpace. You can set up a band or artist page with blogs and featuring your music. You can choose to allow listeners to download your music or read lyrics to the songs. There may (may) be some copyright protection on MySpace, but I would'nt really know, as I have never posted any music there.

Get a patent or copyright first before putting them anywhere.
Maybe notorized helps.
Most certainly someone would steal your material without a moment's thought.
Not sure if the mailing back a certified copy unopened is the way to go also.
Get a copyright.

Make yourself a purevolume or a myspace. If you find out someone steals your songs which i doubt they would you could probably sue them because there would be electronic evidence of you having them first. And plus with those sites i'm pretty sure that anything you put up belongs to you and cannot be taken legally.

I say the number one thing to do is copy write them. Someone who is a friend now, may need a song later and decide to use yours without consent. We've seen many stars sue for copy write infringement. Maybe put them in a safe deposit box.

Go and get your songs copy written first. Then if someone does try to steal them you will already have the legal right to any money that they get out of it.
good luck

Mail a dated copy of each song to yourself and identify it somewhere on the envelope by coded number. Don't open them as they arrive. Store them in a safe deposit box. Then get each one copyrighted. Online or libraries have directions on how to copyright.

You can file a copyright with the US Copyright Office. There are forms available online. This doesn't prevent someone from stealing your stuff, but it protects your rights if it does happen.
