I have been given some trees which I have to dig up. One is a live oak about 10-12 feet tall, 6 inches in diameter. Is it feasible to even attempt moving that one? Or should it just be cut down?

the roots should be 2 to 3 feet past the limbs length when you dig it cut into the ground about 3 ' from the trunk all the way around it , then dig it out keeping the root ball in tack cutting off the roots that extend beyond it. wrap the root ball with burlap using 6 penny nails like straight pins to hold the burlap together around the ball. When you plant it dig the hole twice as big as the ball place ball in ground leaving the burlap on ( it will rot in time and until it does will protect the new roots) back fill with loose soil water very well every day for the 1st 2 weeks to insure a good start.

be sure that you dig a very big root ball & use a rooting hormone. The stuff that you buy in the garden center often do nothing. Best way is to get some willow branches (or other river bottom tree w/ very aggressive root system... the ones that clog your sewer system, ficus would be good), chop htem up & soak the peices in water. Then use the water when you transplant.
The rooting hormone w/ stimulate the tree to restablish the root structure that has been lost.
I'll go along w/ the previous answer that it might be good to get a pro involved.
