It's not bad. Basically it's Takashi Miike's take on the tired old "vengeful longhaired female ghost with a curse" genre (the "yurei" film)...equal parts homage, parody, and quintessential example. It's like David Lynch doing a slasher film, a master chef making a pancake--he's basically working "beneath" his level to produce an excellent take on something that's rather pedestrian. As a result, it's Miike's most "mainstream" movie yet. It's got some pretty freaky parts, and some fresh takes on the genre's conventions, but still, if you're someone who's gotten tired of all these "we've got to figure out the secret behind this longhaired vengeful woman's technologically savvy curse so we can escape certain doom," it may seem like just another trip around the block.

But if you do feel like another trip around the yurei block, it's an excellent representative of the genre. Watch it before the Edward Burns/Shannyn Sossamon remake comes out.
