The first answer (above) is correct for a pro football roster.
For a college football roster, the answer may be different.
Experience, followed by a number generally means how many years of experience the play has since graduating from high school. If you see "JC" - it probably refers to junior college experience. "JV" refers to junior varsity experience.

it denotes the number of years they've played in the NFL. The letters mean such things as free agent, restricted free agent, drafted, acquired via trade and etc...
