I have a 1999 Honda CRV and the maintenance required light has been on for the past couple of months, although my car runs fine. What could be the reason that this light is on?

Lots of different possiblities.
You might have hit a mileage trigger. You might have had an engine code incident.

You can get a code reader (I have a Scanguage -$165 & it tells me all sorts of stuff about what's going on as I drive. Like the fuel milage I'm getting, how many miles I have left if this tank. My coolant temp, etc.) I can also read the error codes to tell me if the maint light means something serious or if there was a momentary low Oxegen occurance. It's more than paid for itself in error code reading alone.

That sounds like a maintenance code. Most vehicles these days have a maintenance schedule. Some of those have to be serviced at special mileage intervals because if some things go they take most of the engine with them. Timing belts need to be replaced at regular intervals on close tolerance engines. If it does break then the piston and valves won't clear each other and you have a tendency to bend valves and crack or hammer holes in the pistons. Damage caused by this will run over $1000.00. Many car manufacturers program the computer to trip a maintenance light to come on at 50 to 80 thousand miles, depending on the interval the belt needs to be replaced to avoid breakage. You should be able to take the vehicle to a shop or the dealer to have it checked. You can also take it to some auto parts stores and they can run the codes.

It is a mileage triggered "reminder" that you should have the vehicle maintenance performed. Most likely there is no problems, actual computer problems or malfunctions would turn on the "check engine" light or worse issues would turn on the red "oil" light or the red "battery" symbol light. Your owners manual should explain how to reset this light. If you don't have the manual or it is lost , try pushing and holding the mileage trip reset button and while holding this button turn on the ignition switch. Continue to hold the reset button until the maintenance required light goes off. Then turn off the ignition and then start the engine. Light should remain off. Hope this helps.

But do remember to do the maintenance on the vehicle. It will dramatically increase the life of the vehicle.

The funny thing about those little lights is that it could mean anything; you never know for sure what the light mean. All I can tell you is to either buy a computer reader for the OBD II output under your steering wheel, or take it to a mechanic. Now as you said you've been driving around for quite some time without it breaking down. One thing that is certain about those lights is that most of the time it means that something small is wrong with the car. It won't affect the major workings of the car until later on down the road.
