I got an email a month ago and this is what it says:
We'll never see this again!
...nor will the people of the next 50-to-1,000 Life Times!

Mars, the Red Planet is about to be spectacular!

This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that
will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded
history. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287. Due to the way
Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can
only be certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth in the Last
5,000 years, but it may be as long as 60,000 years before it happens
again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to within
34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the brightest
object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9 and will
appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest75-power magnification...

Mars will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye....more....

Mars has been seen in the nighttime sky for weeks now asit would be for a number of greater months. August twenty seventh is observed only because of the fact this is the closest thoughts-set between Earth and Mars in this bypass around. In approximately 24-26 months they'll bypass paths returned and Mars' brightness will returned be at a optimal for the cycle. keep in mind, that by skill of optimal I mean that it's going to look like a bright action picture star to the bare eye. it is going to look like a tiny pink ball with 10x50 binoculars, and with a telescope a good observer can be able to make out some constructive factors on it floor. At no time will Mars or any planet outshine the moon, the moon will continuously be the well-known element we see in the sky because of the fact it is so close.

I heard about the Mars hoax and the answer is no . I'll tell you the real scoop on it . In 2003 it was in fact true ! Mars was the closest it's ever been on August 27 2003 .
The next year a New York Observatory reprinted the story again on the August 27th date for a joke . local news and it came on and they said " The latest Mars craze is going on again this year , It was said to be started again by a new york observatory as a joke and well it's been listed as spam. And it currently is circulating the internet as a forward . We spoke to our local astronomers to get the story and they showed us where Mars is . Under the horizon till next year. t's completely not true this year , It did actually happen last in 2003 as we all know but this time it's a joke. an April fools joke . No madness intended . " So it's been floating around for 2 years . Actually there is alot of it going around, crazy emails floating areound of it , observatory phones ringing off the hook .
It has turned into one big hoax . For further reading put in Mars Hoax into google & google news .
Next year the Mars Hoax will float again I bet !

Actually, this is the WORST time to look for Mars. It's practically behind the sun at this point, and if you could spot it, it would barely be a dot.

Second, Mars can get no brighter than a first magnitude star (I think it can outshine Vega at its brightest.) Also, Mars was at it's closest in 2003, and won't get as close again until 2018.

It is a hoax. Mars is on the far side of the Sun all this year and not even visible from Earth.

That e-mail is a scam! The best year for viewing Mars was LAST YEAR. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Whoever sent that out is terribly rude!!

Unfortunately, I think this is a hoax. I got it last year and got all excited and was told it was a hoax. Couldn't hurt to look though! (i'm sure we would've heard more about it if it was anything spectacular)
