I believe it was the introduction and impact of nonsectarian spiritual principles in the counterculture '60s, especially from India. Some of these principles resulted in an embracing of people from all countries, religions, cultures, races, and so on; a sense of Gandhi-type civil disobedience based upon nonviolence; vegetarianism based upon nonviolence towards animals; a deeper understanding and analysis of the distinction between material and spiritual which bridges the misunderstandings between various major and minor world religious teachings and precepts. These are some of the revolutionary concepts introduced to the West during that time.

Spiritually-based good ideas do prevail throughout time to provide for and maintain socieities during their existences. The ideals provided by a spirituality that is inclusive of every living entity on the planet is superior to one that is exclusive of only a certain type of person based upon superficial qualifications, like country of birth, or a particular type of religion. A philosophy that is based upon the best welfare for the greatest number will prevail. A philosophy that is based upon peace, prosperity, tolerance, equality, individual freedoms, and a prohibition of exploitation of others is the basis of what the world should be working towards. These concepts will prevail over those elements who require to work against them because of self-interested goals.

The West has been characterized as overly materialistic, exploiting both natural resources and promoting degrading practices in the name of freedom. The radical-Islamic has been characterized as fanatical and unrelenting in its opposition to Western influences. Can spirituality help resolve the two?

I think that the challenge before modern Western man immediately is to change his thinking that all the world's resources is meant to satisfy his every desire and turn towards a more modest and self-controlled lifestyle. Our desire for more and more has created a mess and threatens the existence of the world's people and the world's environment. Who is assured that the might of countries like the US will not use its power upon whole civilizations when it seeks to serve its own best interests? As for America, it needs to reassure beyond all suspicion its motives in international affairs that its intentions are good, and not exploitive. I think that this will help to relieve world tensions and may help bring about a climate of peace, co-existence with other countries, and tolerance.
