i often think of the same Q myself but do not have a clue.

It's not just in companies. Remember, even in elementary school, there was that kid who got straight As without ever studying? And there were other kids who slacked off but were satisfied with Cs? And then there were the little workaholics who were always looking for extra credit? They all grew up. Also, sometimes the boss plays favorites.
