he keeps swimming to the bottom of the tank and then shooting up to the top like a rocket. what is his issue?

What kind of fish? If this is a clown loach, or a Coolie loach this is normal behavior.

Test the water, you wan't a PH of 7 with no ammonia present.

Maybe he's suffocating. Is he breathing from the top of the tank? I know goldfish do that if there's not enough air in the water.

what kind of fish is it? if it's a Betta..they have a tendency to do that once in a while..mine does that

my corydoras catfish do that, they gulp air from the surface from time to time to help control their buoyancy.

you didn't say what kind of fish this is.

fish play, just like any other animal...you may want to consider getting it a companion...unless it is a beta...

he has a swim bladder problem.
