No harm.
Ask your pediatrician if he thinks that there should be some sort or reduction.
If not, scar will contract, and it is basically scar, so it should retract at least somewhat.

It's probably an umbilical hernia, and it has nothing to do with the length the cord was cut. That fell off weeks ago.
Hopefully you're taking the baby in for all his check ups and immunizations - and he should be going in for a 6 month check up before long. Show it to his pediatrician. These can exist for a time after delivery without problem, but they need to be closely followed, because they can develop into a more dangerous strangulated hernia where a portion of the bowel can slip through the opening in the abdominal musculature and become trapped. A very dangerous situation. So, please make sure you have his doctor check it soon.

It shouldn't cause the baby any harm. And it wasn't a surgeon (note spelling) who cut the cord -- it was your OB.

Now I have 2 questions for you. Are you just now noticing this after 5 months?? and Have you spoken to your son's Pediatrician about it?????? It may not be a "protrusion" but a herniation. Tomorrow morning, call the doctor and make an appointment.

It is an umbilical hernia. It comes from a weakness in the wall of the abdominal muscles and bowel protrudes forward. It will probably resolve on its own. Just watch it and bring it to your doctor's attention. Most don't need to be fixed surgically.

None. Outies are Outies. Some are larger than others, however if there is redness or swelling you wan't to have him looked at.

If redness or swelling is present, take baby's temp before calling Doc.

Dont worry. Babies pick up on worry and tend to cry a lot.

My mom had that problem with my sister, and her grandma told her to tape a quarter on it. It worked.
