Gotta' go with the Nike slogan for this. "Just do it". It's time to get out there. Out of your comfort zone and really put yourself out there. Social anxiety can be tough. Especially when you're starting at the bottom of the spectrum without any friends where you live. I'm sure you could go to the Doctor and get some happy pills or keep trying to make friends online, but none of that will really help 'you' break out of the shell and develop your social skills. Start studying at a coffee shop. Maybe make an extra lap around campus making sure to smile while you look people in the eye. Take any kind of conversation you can get. Find excuses to go to the store more than once a week. Crash a party. You've got to just get out there and push yourself. It'll help you build friendships, even if it's slowly, and it will help you get over being shy. It won't cure it ofcourse, but it's a start. Good luck to you.

Like I you don't go out much but I do have friends. You know that's the beauty of friendship you don't go looking for it, it just happens. You don't have to make too many freinds, just choose some nice people you have something in common with. You can observe this through class or group discussions or from a simple chat. In this way you'll get an idea who they are and if you share the same sentiments. The whole idea is be ready to share a part you to strangers and be open to accept people's individuality.
I was just wondering why weren't you allowed to make friends.? We could be friends if you like, though.

Volunteering is a great way to meet more people and share in a common cause without feeling obligated to become good friends with them. Some good places to volunteer are a soup kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, and the local Red Cross.

At school. Find at least one person. For example: Go out to parties w/ ur roommate. Then once you make some friends at the parties you can branch off and meet more and more ppl. It's an endless cycle. Good luck.

Well, you can make alot of net friends here, but you really need to force yourself to get out more. Surely there are school functions such as clubs or groups that you can join.
