The one that sticks in my mind is DOD photos from when the allies came across Auschwitz. Those images changed my childhood forever.

I think I'd have to plum for a picture which demonstrates the horror of conflict rather than some bullish imperialistic propaganda photo which was largely posed. Maybe the one by an American military photographer (O'Donnell I think) of a little Japanese boy with his dead sister strapped to his back - head lolling. its a heartbreaking image.

Message to Kai; would you have preferred to see photos of an American GI carrying his dead comrade on his shoulders during an invasion of the Japanese home islands?To answer the question charly you may be thinking of the post war demolition of the German U-boat Yards.
