A person from Canada is called a Canadian
A person from Argentina is called an Argentinian
A person from the US would be called a United States of American??? Just too long - so we're American. South America as a continent contains the word America but most people define their nationality by their country and not their continent name.

Because we're American citizens. We may not have originally been from America but we are all united as one people through citizenship. People say America when referring to the U.S.A. because it's short, it's like a nick name. Though, I do have to say that it's sad because many Americans believe that the U.S.A. is the only part of the Americas. But that's plain ol' ignorance.

Aren't you American? So am I, only I'm from the north. No difference. You go to Europe and Asia and we're Americans. Do you want those Middle Easterns to know you as American? Then why are you ragging on us? I'll tell all my Arab and Russian Comrads that you are the American, not us (as in US). And learn how to spell in English a little better.

We do, but that does not exclude others from North and South America refering to themselves as such. It is much more efficient for us to say American than Citizen of the United States of America.

because we are proud enough of being Americans we kept the name, others changed it. that would be like blaming someone from Buenos Aires, for saying that they are Argentineans. yes?
