Most technological advancement came from war, whether hot or cold.
Internet? Developed for the military.
Computers? Developed for firing the big guns of battleships and breaking enemy codes.
Microwave ovens? From radar for finding and destroying enemy ships and planes.
Integrated circuits? So electronics could be made small enough to fit in a missile or a sattelite.
Weather satellites that warn us of hurricanes and help monitor the earth's environment? From spy satellites.
Communication satellites and telephones and telegraphs and radios and the like? For communicating with armies in the field in real time.
Air travel? From planes that could fly a long way fast with a heavy load of bombs to drop on people.
Highway systems, railroads, and public roads? To move the army and its supplies about.
Modern medicine? From treating the wounded.
I could go on and on, but if you have studied history or technology at all and kept anything close to an open mind, you will come back to this answer. The civilian population reaps the benefits of the "military-industrial complex."
The fact of the matter is, in a wonderfully semi-Darwinian way we keep struggling to prove our fitness by surviving against one another. In this struggle, we keep advancing our mastery over the world we live in so that we may have a supreme advantage. Would we live more paecefull lives if we weren't always fighting wars? Sure we would. In caves, most likely. Thanks I think I will live my modern life and enjoy all the benefits it comes with, bought at the price of blood in a land kept free by the sacrifice of those who wore the uniform before me.

I agree that war is no good. But, think about it... Unfortunately it seems that every golden age has come after a war... It's as if being remembered of tragedy makes us appreciate life and peace more... Isn't that terrible? Now to answer litterally your question, cannon fodder really only serves the interests of remote businessmen and their political backers. Who suffers the most? Civilians... and of course, their patrimony...

September 11, 2001. It is not war that is good but the defense of the innocent.

Conrtolling the world's population. Occasionally diplomacy. Remember, Americans had to fight a war to get the British out, so that was one good thing. It's not good for much else, besides that.

War makes a lot of money for a lot of people.
Here is a question for you.
What do you think is more important, achieving riches or caring of your fellow humans?
If you picked Caring, you are wrong, humans have been killing each other since their inception.

Well...
Gained the U.S. our independence from Great Britian.
Kept the U.S. together when eleven Southern states attempted to secede.
Stopped Napoleon from conquering all of Europe.
Got rid of Hitler after he had conquered all of Europe, and freed the defeated countries.
Sometimes there's no other acceptable path...but sure shouldn't be jumped into lightly...

Killing.
It's the easy way out of Democracy.
Pushes the Agenda foreword.
But that's not the way I was brought up to handle things.

Absolutely NOTHING! With the exception of pointing out the biggest losers (those who pick the fight but send others to finish it)
