a + (a + 2) + (a + 4) = 45
3a + 6 = 45
3a = 39
a = 13

13, 15, 17

Hi mikelangelo

First, divide the number by 3:

45 / 3 = 15.

Now you know that 15 + 15 + 15 = 45.

To make three consecutive odd numbers, take 2 from the first number and give it to the last:

(15 - 2) + 15 + (15 +2) = 45

13 + 15 + 17 = 45.

Done.

Hope this helps!

x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 45
x + x + 2 + x + 4 = 45
3x + 6 = 45
3x = 39
x = 13

The numbers are 13, 15, and 17

I suspect this was a homework assignment where you were to practice setting up an algebra equation to solve this. What does consecutive mean? 1,2,3 or -8,-9,-10 that sort of thing Consecutive odd integers would be 1,3,5 or 11,13,15 or -21,-23,-25 Problem #1: Let x be the first of the consecutive odd integers. The next one in the series would be x + 2 The third x + 4 Added together they equal 51 x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 51 solve for x Problem #2: Consecutive doesn't indicate ascending or descending. It just means order 1,2,3 or 3,2,1 are consecutive First integer is x Second is x + 1 Third is x + 2 x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = -30 solve for x

let x = first number, x + 2 = second number, x + 4 = third number

x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 45
3x + 6 = 45
3x = 39
x = 13

The numbers are 13, 15, 17.

I prefer my approach...

a1 = 2n-1; a2 = 2n+1; a3 = 2n+3

with n an integer (this garuntees a1 odd if they are integers)

a1+a1+a3 = 45

(2n-1)+(2n+1)+(2n+3) = 45

6n+3 = 45
6n =42
n = 7

So

a1 = 2(7)-1=13; a2 = 2(8)+1= 15; 2(8)+3= 17

EDIT

One should note while that interesting solution is good... the problem with it is that it only finds A solution and does not garuntee there is no other solution (yes its trivial but the point is valid)

let the nos. be x, x+2 ,x+4
therefore
x+x+2+x+4=3x+6=45
3x=39
x=13
nos. are 13, 15, 17
