Yeah. Why else would people refuse to wear certain clothes unless they've been approved by "cool" people and are already being worn by other "cool" people. This "friend" of mine, Kala, got her degree in fashion and acts like she's better than everybody else. She insults everyone she considers a "friend," but we all know she's just really good at hiding how inadequate she feels.

It is also common sence.

If you go around wearing something people used to wear in the 70s and 80 you will look like a clown. Just think: structured jackets, hair with "volume" OMG. Wearing something that was in fashion 150 ago (like a white curly wig) would be even stranger. However, not wearin one at that time would be a sign of lower class in the society.

But yes, concentrating on the fashion too much is a refuge of the insecure. Also shows lack of own taste and creativity.

I love this question - when I was a teen my Dad said he always knew what to buy me - if it made him throw up I'd love it - nothings changed 25 years later - I don't follow the fashions, I've always liked my own style - and I"ve not deviated much since being a teen - it suits me and my personality and I really don't want to look like everyone else walking around - when I see it as a sign of insecurity is when you're over 25 and your're still trying to dress out of the junior department! Please - spandex does only stretch so far! There is a point where you should become content with a style of clothing that you make the clothing appealing regardless of its "in or out of " style and season - I'm very classic - black, fitted or tapered, one inch above the knee - dress not skirts - sweaters not blazers - nothings changed and now that I"m 42, probably won't. So there's my thoughts - following fashion is the refuge of the insecure or at minimal the person who has yet to identify himself or herself and allowed that to dominate their style.

It can be. Then again, there are those of us who dress the way we like and it just happens to be the current "fashion". Dressing in weird ways, however, is a cry for negative attention.
