I'm referring to the nickname for Chicago. When it's used on its own, such as Chi. Or Chi-town.

I believe you mean the "Chi" part of the city's nickname "Chi-town." If so, it is pronounced the same as "shy" so... shy-town. If not and you are wondering how to pronounce the entire name "Chicago" then the others are right. Probably the easiest way to describe it is... "shi-ca-go"

I'm also from chicago and it is CHI-town like China. But SHicago. Added info: Chicagoland actually includes part of Indiana and Wisconsin which most Chi-town people don't know.

Yeah I be conscious that too. I stay in Danville (3hrs) from Chicago. lots of individuals have come from Chicago to stay right here via public housing in Chicago final down. My understanding is the same way you pronounce the chi in the word chicken.

A lot of non-locals pronouncing Chicago with the Latin pronunciation /ch/..."chihuahua," "chicken,"and "China."
Wrong... it's the French pronunciation /sh/... like "champagne," "machine," or "Chevrolet." The French were the first explorers in the area so we get the French version of, /SHI -kaw-go/ which either meant "stink weed" or "onion grass,"in the tongue of the native interpreter. This is what they evidently smelled as their canoes entered the river from Lake Michigan...another word from the French with the ch pronounced as /sh/.
