i have a 1997 ford f150 with a factory 4.2l v6 that has locked up. can i replace it with a 4.6l or 5.0l v8 and use the factory transmission, or will i have to replace the transmission as well?

Don't think so as all noted are different engines, not the same engine family and have different torque ratings.

Additionally you have different wiring harnesses, computer controls, and pollution inspections that you will no longer meet because the data says a 4.2L and you have replaced that totally with a non-certified for your vehicle power plant.

There are also the suspension geometry, spring ratings and other load bearing factors due to the weight differences. At the end of the day it is still a 1997 truck and you'll have to drive it to get your money out of it.

I'd go back with original as that is the least cost to you and fastest route to back on the road.

Call your local FORD store, ask for service, then ask for the Service Mgr. I found that if you ask a clear direct question, no filler (Don't gab it up), that most will pride themself releasing the wealth of information they know or have access to.

no,,i don't think they will exchange the bell housing is different on them,i own a repair shop,,and i have seen both of these engines,,and they do use a different transmission,,it would be nice if they would though,,i hope this helps.

I would say yes, but you will run into troubles with the wiring. The computers are different, as well as the components. Good luck.
