Im a sophomore in high school and I play basketball in winter so I want to do cross country this fall for school to get in shape. I'm in pretty bad shape from summer, but I'm not overweight. What are some good running or motivational tips you could offer to a beginner?

All right here's the deal....
Find a course but you can begin just going around your block or a local track. Run (jog/walk) five-six days a week. You should gradually increase your times and distances as you get in better shape. It will take time but once you build up you'll be amazed by how much you improve.
Try doing three short to medium runs a week, one hill workout, and one longer and slower run. For the hill workout, pick a hill that's about 50 to 100 meters in length and not too steep. Build your way up to being able to run up it fairly hard 5-7 times. Always take a rest day off preferably after your long day. Stretch well daily and drink tons of water. Have a great time training and once you hook up with a team in the Fall you'll be great. Also, start a training log/diary to keep notes of your progress and times etc.

For now, start with running a mile around your neighborhood. Do this several times a week. The following week, increase to two miles each run and so on. The best motivation I've found for myself when I need to get back into shape is to sign up for a 5k race that is a few weeks away. It will give you a goal to work towards.
If you happen to be near a city that has Nike Training runs, this is a great way to get in shape while having fun. They have l mile, 3 mile and 5 mile runs at various paces. You also get to have free food after the workout, you can try out Nike shoes during your run, and they have prize drawings. The runs are free! For more information, go to:www.nikerunhitremix.com

Don't get frustrated. You can be an amazing endurance runner it just might take a little time. Start out slow. Maybe a mile or half a mile a day and see how you feel from there. If you push yourself too hard your body might not be able to take it. Still try to improve a little everyday though. Have friends run with you, it's not as much fun to run alone. Also you can participate in local 5k's. They really help you see how a race really is. Hope I helped! :) God Bless!

run with a the team in the summer, ino our school us trackies train year round. if you cant run with a friend it always goes better... music is good to motivate, or run to a certain point to give you a goal, gradually increase the workout each day, but dont overwork yourself you have to take days off too
