Take a look at the specs for your laptop, if you see something regarding NIC or 10/100, then you have a NIC or wireless card already installed. If not, you will have to get a wireless card as well as a wireless router to connect your laptop to the internet. You will also need an ISP (Internet Service Provider).

When I got internet on my laptop I had to get the router and a wireless card. Some laptops all ready have the wireless capabilities without having to buy the card. The router sends out your signal (I think.). The wireless card picks up the signal to use for your internet. Ask the person you're getting your laptop from for help with the internet access. Usually they'll tell you what you'll need and answer any questions you have about it. But it was really easy for me to set up and I was able to start using it right away. I hope that helps!

is it a new laptop? most new laptops (like 98-100%) come with their own network card. You need a modem for the internet to work, your ISP (internet service provider) will supply you with that, eg. sympatico, rogers internet. from their you can choose wireless network (i.e. you will need to buy a router) which is a WLAN, or you can choose a wired network. Where you need that internet wire to hook up to the computer, wireless is less messy (d'oh).
