Since I have T-mobile prepaid I see what your saying, but t-mobile actually counts its minutes by a dollar amount and that dollar amount equals the amount of time that you use.
This is why it is pre-paid and you have a dollar amount and not a minute amount.
You should always check the charges amounts at T-mobile pre-paid site for amounts that they charge for messaging.
And if your over the Gold member rewards which is when you hit 100$ it simply means that any amount you place on your pre-paid account you are good for 1 year, and which does not include text messaging, which stays at regular rates.

I love the pre-paid, I used to pay 35$ amonth for 300min which expired every month and them messing up my bills and for 1 year = 420$. Now I get 1000 minutes for 1yr for 100$

T-Mobile prepay, like all major prepay phone services charge set amounts in dollars and cents for each activity rather than charging minutes.

It would depend on what type of prepay program you are on as to how much it would cost for texting and internet use (aol messenger).

Typically it takes off anywhere between 2 to 4 minutes off your total when you send a MMS message [pic/text] and 1 to 4 minutes off your total when sending a SMS/IM. It all depends on how many characters are sent or received.
