Try being honest. If you were born and bred in that time, do you think you would be the type of person that would believe the earth was round, or would you stick with popular opinion?

Probably. I consider myself intellectual and enlightened, and believe in a lot of ideas that are not generally accepted, but which, if you know enough, and think about them, make sense.

I'd would believe him, after he pointed out that when watching a boat sail way on the horizion, the mast top is the last part that you see go out of sight, thus proving the Earth is round. He also knew about the wind patterns, certain latitudes the winds blow from west to east, and other latitudes blow east to west, a pretty sharp and "Ballsy" sailor that Chris was (hey, 2 out of three ships lost ain't so bad for back then, most boats never came back at all)

Despite current popular belief, that whole 'earth is flat' thing was not the popular belief back then, especially amongst the educated and amongst sailors. They were well aware that the earth was round, but they didn't know much about the Oceans.

Sailors could tell from the way land, masts, and other things disappeared and appeared over horizons that they were dealing with a curved planet.
