If you are certain that the overheating problem was caused by dust and dirt, you should to go Staples, Best Buy or Circuit City and get compressed gas duster.
You don't need to take it apart and it is perfectly safe for computer since its supposed to be anti-static. However, please make sure you shut off your computer and unplugged your power adapter before you start dusting off your computer fan.
I hope it helps

Yes compressed air is the answer. You must put something in between the fan blades to prevent them from spinning and breaking thanks to the pressure of the compressed air. You could use a stick of some sort... just please don't let it get stuck or lost in there.
I've had to deal with an overheating laptop and this is the method I used to fix it. I certainly didn't want to pay Geek Squad for something I could've done at home.

You can buy an aerosol can of compressed air and give it a few blasts (once you take the cover off the pc).
Also, there are special little vac cleaners just for use with the computer.

I would use canned air to blow the dust off. No need to open the laptop case.
