I wouldn't let anyone label me - I don't know where all these "labels" started and came from anyway - when I was in school it was pretty simple - you were _____________ and you wrote in what you were if you were something other than just plain American. But now we can't be American - I'm so sick of being caucasion - I used to be white - I'm not sure when I changed colors, but somehow I'm no longer white or if I am it's, white, non-hispanic - now what's that all about! All I can say for certain anymore is I have very white skin and I was born in Arkansas - these are two things that are truths with no variables. What a sad world we've come to live in.

because for most, american means white and the label helps separate the masses. if you're not white, you're something else so let's label it as such.
I had a somewhat similar discussion with an ignorant person. before the new superman movie came out, this person stated that superman should be played by an american. what did that mean? so someone said "hey how about denzel washington?" well of course that didn't fly with this person. of course what she meant was caucasian and no matter what I said about being an american could mean any race, she was just not biting...or actually she was..out of malice!

The same reason black people are called African American. I mean...most the black people I know are from America for generations, but they still have the African label on, like I cant tell or something. Chances are if you are black, your family at some point in time, is from Africa or thereabouts. I know tons of people who's Mexican decended family goes back in America as many generations as my family...they call themselves Chicanos or Mexican American. Im very interested in family heritiage and genes, family names, etc. We have all come from so far away...

You are actually a Chicano. (you can even find this in the dictionary) Trust me, I'm not even of Mexican descent, am just hispanic, and still people try to say i'm Mexican. they just dont know. You are all American, but, apperently you have to claim your heritage too.

Cause some people are afraid that if they don't mention that you're "Mexican" or whatever that you might get offended and that someone is trying to make you more 'white' or whatever by leaving our your ethnicity. It's mostly to do with the whole 'politically correct' stuff, which is total bullshit but believe me, there's someone somewhere that would be offended if they weren't called "Mexican-American" and everyone knows how lawsuit happy offended people are....

The name Jesus might be a part of it. English speaking Americans do not name their children JESUS. Even though it may sound different in mexican (spanish) In english it is Jesus, the messiah/prophet ect. depending on religious denomination.

Don't put up with it. My father was born in Greece and would probably hit someone who tried to call him anything else BUT American.
