I grew up drinking Kool-Aid out of jelly jars, wearing swim trunks to school. Over three quarters of the stuff in my house came from a second rate flea market. I had to grift all the half way decent stuff I had. Watch married with children and move them down a paygrade, you'll get me as a kid.
My dad stole propane so we could heat water for bathes on the bbq. What's sad is that we weren't even the poorest people on our block.

Yep, but didn't have anything in the refrigerator. Had a couple of bucks, didn't get paid for two more weeks. Had a bag of rice, some coffee, and a jar of peanut butter.

Thought about using the money to wash my clothes, decided I could wash them in the sink. Went out on the town, bought a hamburger and a fried cherry pie at Hardees ( 1974). Ate rice and most of the time. Ate the peanut butter right out of the jar. I had paid my rent 3 months in advance, so I had a place to stay.

Went to the laundrimat late at night and took the agitators out and scavenged the loose change from under them. Decided I needed to manage my money better. I did.

I remember burning my bean soup and crying because I had no more beans let alone other ingredients. That soup was supposed to last at least a week. I did have a pack of ramen noodles that was only nibbled on on one corner by the mice so it's not like I would have starved but I just ate burnt soup.
