It does some how. According to the Purpose Driven Life it is to remind us not to become to attatched to our place here on earth and that there are better things waiting for us on the other side.

Are you saying that Mel Gibson will now develop some new character? It has been revealed to me that the upside down cross represents suffering and humiliation. This is one of the things that some people suffered before being put to death or as their punishment. Some were left out upside down on the hill this way to be eaten alive by wild animals now believed to be extinct. The Romans would bait them with fresh meat and blood over their bodies. The Romans would watch from a nearby building to make sure no one released them. Maybe some only developed character in their next life. If Christ was truly a prophet or seer than he knew his fate already vividly. This is why he prayed all night sweating blood in fear and anticipation. Take this cup from me. Christ already had character. He now has even more. Sorry, the question just reminded me of it.

I believe that one of the hardest questions in life is "Why do we suffer", but suffering does bring about character. Some good and bad. Some people become stronger, able to persevere, have more patience, endurance and are more thankful for what they have. Others are hardened by suffering, feeling sorry for themselves or angry at God or other people. It's the ones that pick up the pieces, move on and try to enjoy life that ultimately have stronger character from it.

Strength of character is something not easily achieved. But suffering makes you strong in mind and in body. GL & GB

Hopefully it would bring about a character that would begin to understand why we suffer, and work toward ending it.

I for one have to believe that is true, at least for me and in my experiences.
Suffering teaches us stamina, endurance, and discipline, you also gain strength and wisdom. Suffering has given me a special perspective on myself as a human being, and just what I am capable of.
I am personally very thankful for the not so pleasant experiences in my life, as they have made me who I am today. I feel very strong, confident, and sure of myself, I have weathered many storms....and have no fear of what lies ahead.

I would say, it would build, a stronger out look in life, for being, Thankful for all you have, even if it isn't, everything it could be. With the thought, of making it better, & just being happy, with the present things, you do have.

Either a strong character: someone who can handle bad situations with grace and make it through without giving in...or a weak character: someone who uses situations as excuses for their subsequent bad actions/behaviors.
