I heard part of it. Here is the transcript: http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/08/20060821.html

In the 15 minutes or so I heard, he seemed much more conciliatory regarding alternative opinions to those of the administration:

"You know, it's an interesting debate we're having in America about how we ought to handle Iraq. There's a lot of people -- good, decent people, saying, withdraw now. They're absolutely wrong."

later he said

"It's an honest debate and it's an important debate for Americans to listen to and to be engaged in. In our judgment, the consequences for defeat in Iraq are unacceptable. . . . .I will never question the patriotism of somebody who disagrees with me. This has nothing to do with patriotism; it has everything to do with understanding the world in which we live. "

He is still completely unbending, but at least he admits that reasonable people can have different opinions. It is no longer "if you are not with us, you are against us."

I disagree with him on most things. Maybe here he is just paying lip service to listening to other opinions, but even THAT is a step in the right direction.

It is possible he really believes that the debate on the topic is useful and might give the administration some ideas that they did not come up with themselves. My biggest complaint about that administration since even before 9/11/2001 is that they completely turned a deaf ear to **anything** that at all disagreed with their perspective. That attitude is dangerous. Maybe finally they are changing.

Yes, I am an optimist.

More or less say what you want but he's going to follow through with his plan, you already voted him in and he has two years to do whatever he wants.
And he wants Iraq.
