To treat mildew first carefully brush or shake off mildewed area.
Pretreat the stains by rubbing the areas with a heavy-duty liquid detergent. Then launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric, using bleach safe for fabric. (Chlorine bleach is best if OK for the fabric.) Always check for colorfastness before using bleach.
Let item dry in the sun.
Badly mildewed fabric may be damaged beyond repair. Old stains may respond to flushing with dry cleaning fluid, i.e., Carbona.
Another option would be for your daughter to take the ex to small claims court and sue him for the replacement cost of the clothing.

There is a product called X14 Mildew stain remover. It is made for bathrooms, but if you are careful you CAN use it on laundry. It CAN and WILL ruin your clothes, but YOURS are ALREADY ruined aren't they.
When using this product, be SURE to fill your washer FIRST with COLD water. Then spray on the X14, and WATCH THE MILDEW DISAPPEAR! IMMEDIATELY dunk the item in the cold water or it will remove the color or possibly make a hole.
You may want to test an inconspicious area for color fastness before you begin.
You may ALSO want to try filling your tub with HOT water and a splash of bleach. Then soak the items. Once the mildew disappears launder the item as usual.
GOOD LUCK!!

The only thing that will take out mildew stains is chlorine(Bleach). What I would recommend is that you sort the clothes by color and not mix colors if possible and soak them in a warm approx. room temp water and bleach mixture, You can use bleach on most linens as long as you do't pour it straight on them and you dilute it. I would recommend using about 1 oz. per 10 gals of water. Try soaking them, keeping watch to make sure that the colors don't start running, This should work, it does in the industrial industry.

Mildew stains are one of the worst stains to remove...You cant use chlorine bleach on colors and some fabrics so try soaking in a non chlorine bleach like "Biz". Some at home products you can safely use would be rubbing alcohol, baking soda, or ammonia. Maybe try taking some things that are expensive and worth spending a little extra money to have professionally cleaned at a dependable Dry Cleaners.

hmmmmm...first, if you can ...wash them with clorox..bleach...let them soak awhile..and that will kill the mildew and get rid of most of the stains...some will turn brown....then do not dry them..treat them with something like shout of zoot...and let that soak for maybe 30 minutes or more and then wash them again...then dry them...but if you just wash and dry- the stains will be set and hard to remove.
