Ok...this answer may not be the most CREATIVE, but it is the most ACCURATE. An oral thermometer can be digital or mercury. It is used to read a normal temp at 98.6 degrees. A rectal thermometer is used in the rectum and for small babies usually has a mark on it so you know how far to insert it. It is usually a mercury thermometer but some are also digital. Usually the digital ones are also already programmed to read at the correct temp. Normally you subtract a degree for temps taken rectally and add a degree for temps taken under the arm, whereas if a temperature is taken orally, no adjustments need to be made.

Well it is good to have both in the house if you have small kids and make sure they are different. You don't want to check the baby's temperature with the rectal then put it in your husbands mouth, well maybe some men deserve that. HAHAHA the difference in a rectal thermometer and an oral one is the taste . The rectal is kind of s h i tty tasting LOL

If you are in the hospital or the doctor's office and they want to take YOUR oral temp with the RED tipped thermometer...RUN!!!

Remember people!! RED is for RECTAL.

To answer your question, it's the taste.

Both can measure temperatures, but only one leaves you with the feeling you should send them flowers afterwords.

Say did you hear the one about the Doctor who in the grocery checkout line reached into his shirt pocket and grabbed a thermometer to try to sign the check? When he saw what he had done he screamed "This is awful!" The checker said "Oh that was a simple mistake" To which the Doctor said "Sure, but I'm wondering what axxhole has my pen?"

Oral means mouth and rectal means in ones rear-end or anus. A thermometer is designed to take ones body temperature.

Rectal (used) is extra-crunchy and piquant when you chew it, especially if it has just been used to check the temp of someone who ate peanuts about 8 hours ago. YUM!
