I am not a doctor and I did have this problem and my wife was suffering from it for a long time. Many of the allopathic medicine did not really help the matter, although some relief was there for some time and again erupted. An allopathic doctor friend of mine, told us that more often than not recurrence of mouth ulcer could be indication of deficiency of iron and some vital minerals. A balanced diet is the only answer. He recommended taking fish and mutton, at regular intervals. This is a common problem among the vegetarians, who are more in number in India. For the vegetarians, eating cooked greens and vegetables as well as dates will help.

We did consult a homeopath in this connection. The homeopathic medicine administered by her, I found to be more effective. Please consult a homeopath also.

There is a good mouth rinse called PEROXYL that will help heal and also help with the pain. Just take a capful into your mouth, close your lips and let the rinse sit for a minute over the area. You will feel it bubble up, but it's not painful. Best to do this just before bedtime so it can work overnight.

They can be caused by irritation (as with braces), stress or a lack of B12, folic acid, iron or lysine in the diet. If your nutritional habits aren't the best (and most aren't), you should find a multivitamin with high levels of B12, folic acid and iron. Also try L-lysine supplements (can get at any drugstore). Start taking 1000mg daily during an outbreak; after they are healed take 500mg daily.

Chimerably has very good advice. I will only add to take the lysine on an empty stomach between meals for greatest effectiveness. Also, DGL tablets from the health food store can be dissolved in the mouth to get relief for some persons.

It's actually called "cold sores." It's caused by caused by the virus known as herpes simplex type I (HSV-1). After you first get it, it is dormant until something triggers it again, like stress.

Just don't kiss anyone and share drinks. Wash your hands well and don't touch it very often. It should then go away by itself.

However, if there is pus, a white substance that comes out of the sore, or if you get a fever, see a doctor. If it lasts over a week, see a doctor too. It should be okay, though.
