The correct way to assess a good college should be based on many factors: Your major area of study; the rank of the college.; the average GPA and SAT scores of the students enrolled; the number of students who graduate with a 4-year degree; affordibility; your eligibility for financial aid, grants, and scholarships; size of the college; distance from home; geographic setting of the college (is it in a large city or in the woods with no public transportation?); availablity of sports and athletic opportunities; ratio of professors to students.

For instance if you want to major in marine biology, URI is good.

UCONN is good for pre-med, allied health careers, dentistry, and pre-vet and animal sciences. It has a decent business school.

Southern, Western, Eastern, and Central have good teaching programs. Western is also good for nursing, science and business.

In Virginia, public colleges have a reasonable tuition even for out-of state students. My daughter went to Mary Washington, and the tuition remained constant for the four years she attended.

SUNY colleges in NY have many community and 4- year schools throughout the state. Each have a different focus.

What factors are most important to you? Pick the top 5 factors. Then go to collegeboard.com. You can list the parameters you want and the search will list several schools that meet your criteria. If you know what you want to do, then picking the right college is somewhat easier.

Be sure to visit the choices you pick because that may be a deciding factor on where you go to school. Also talk with some of the current students during the college visitations; they will have lot of information to share with you.

Good luck.

What an unusual list of colleges. I doubt that very many Pennsylvanians are looking at so many Canadian schools.

The University of Toronto is, by far, the best school on your list. If you can get into it, you ought to be adding some decent private schools and some of the better state schools to your list (like UC-Berkeley, U of Michigan, UNC or U of Virginia).

UConn, UR, SUNY and Virginia Tech are decent state schools.

If U of Toronto stands our on one end, Virginia State stands out on the other. It is the only Historically Black College in the list. If you are thinking about HBCUs, you ought to think about Howard or Morehouse. Most of the rest can't really compare with them academically. I assume this is your safety school -- but you can probably find a better one.

You should look through the web sites of US News & World Reports and Princeton Review to get more information on these schools and to see what schools might be a better fit.

why don't you first narrow it down to see which school offers the major that you want to pursue. Then be realistic: Is money an issue for you? If not then continue with this, ask yourself if you can live away from home or? If i were you I would try to visit all of these colleges because being there in person really helps with the decision making. Good luck!

Of the ones you list in the U.S. that I am familiar with, Va. Tech and UConn are pretty decent schools. R.I. also isn't bad. That's about all I know, so maybe apply to those, among others.

See the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings that just came out last week.
