Doomed to eternal darkness for their sin of consuming human blood the Lord makes their flesh extremely photosensitive so that they must dwell in darkness lest they burn in the light...ha ha , that was good huh!

Sunlight only effects vampiers of certin lore. There are many differant belifes in a vampier like being from all over the world, and not all of them suffer advers effects from sunlight. Even to the triditional Europen vampier sun light had varying effects depending on whos story you where reading.
How ever for the vampiers that were effected by sunlight, it was because there was suposed to be goodness in the daylight. The power of god is ofter referd to as the light. So tradititionaly the power of the lord casting out the evil of the night caused the painful effects to vampiers. I hope that helps

Sunlight kills vampires because the very first vampire was cursed by Raphael , Angel of the Dawn to forever hide beneath the ground or the Sun would bite and burn at his flesh .

The answer to many vampire myths can be found by studying Porphyria. Sensitivity to sunlight, "fangs", pale skin, all are symptoms of Porphyria.
And no, sunlight doesn't kill all vampires.....

Vampires are a contrast of humans, who are day oriented for the most part. There's also the old reason of "vampires being souless beasts" thus the sun is thought of as a purifying agent and destroys the evil creature. As for physiological explanation, (if vamps were real) it may have to do with melanin and cell reproduction.

Well, I've heard that if you mix sunlight dish-soap with water and spray it on your houseplants, it will kill spider mites and what not. Maybe it's the same thing? I don't know for sure, but if you are having a problem with a vampire, maybe try it and see if it works. (apparently Dawn or Palmolive won't work for this)??
Good Luck with that!

garwy, vampires exist (or are said to exist) for thousands of years. So, your comment about Polidori doesn't explain the question.
I have nothing more to add, the others made some excellent points.

the original vampire story was john polidori's 'the vampyre' which was a satire of his ex-friend lord byron (the english poet).
byron was a heavy drinker and had major drug issues (opium and laudanum - both early forms of heroin). he was rarely able to get up in the morning because of his vicious hangovers, and even when he could he hated bright lights (which exacerbated his headache).
polidori worked this up as a fear of sunlight - and over the years it got built up further and further.

IT DOESN'T KILL VAMPIRES, IT JUST GIVES THEM A WICKED TAN. THEN THE OTHER VAMPIRES THINK THAT THEY ARE ***** VAMPIRES AND LYNCH THEM FOR NO REASON.
