I think you meant "serial ATA," right? Serial ATA is faster. If your MB supports both, choose a serial ATA drive.

If you already have the disk, it has one or the other. Use whatever it has. If you have not bought the disk yet, then it's up to you. Both ATA and Serial ATA have their fans.

First you need to know if your motherboard supports SATA, two different connections ATA and SATA
