Everything Mazatli said is true. I have an MA in Psychology. There is no such thing as an MA in Psychiatry. And attend a program that offers 60 hours with a 100 hour practicum followed by a 700 hour internship. You will need this for most state licensing along with National Board Certification. And, most states will not license you until you have received your Nat'l Bd. Cert. Go to ww.nbcc.org
Good luck with your academic career.

You wouldn't be getting a Master's in psychiatry. You probably mean psychology.
If your goal is a counseling license or credential, the length of the program depends upon the state that you are in and their licensing requirements. Because of this, a Master's Degree program can vary from 32 units to over 60. Be careful about the shorter programs. If you move to another state that requires the longer program you will have to go back to school. I knew someone from the East Coast with a 32 unit M.A. who had to get a second M.A. in CA to be able to practice here. A 60 unit M.A. will take between 2-3 years to complete. You take a variety of classes, including personality theory, clinical psychology, research methods, technique, psychopharmacology, substance abuse, etc. - again depending upon the licensing requirements of the state you are in and the degree program that you are in.
The different degrees at the Master's level are an M.A. or M.S. in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, School Psychology or some variation of these; or an Masters in Social Work. After working in the field I would suggest getting a credential as a School Psychologist if you would like to work in the schools or an MSW. I think the training of the M.A./ M.S. are just as good as the MSW, but there seem to be more jobs for the MSW.

you need to be pre-med. I've never heard of a master's in psychiatry. Maybe you are thinking of a masters in psychology.
