Well, most of the time I read non-fiction, or at least one hopes it to be non-fiction as most of what I read is history in that I work in that field.
However, just for day-today utility about the most useful book I ever read was one called "How Things Work" which provided descriptions and drawings of just about everything from simple household electrical and plumbing systems to nuclear reactors and hydroelectric dams.
I can't tell you how often the information I gleaned from that tome has come in handy, either when I was fixing something or trying to understand a new piece on some technological issue.

"The Feeling Good Handbook" by David Burns, MD
It cured nearly five years of depression (with suicidal tendencies). That was a year ago, so his methods are quite effective. I can't think of a more helpful book, including the bible. I think Burns was divinely inspired when he wrote this book. Two psychiatrists were convinced that I would never get over depression. That was over a year ago. I read the book and got better in a matter of weeks. Now that's pretty helpful.

The Personality Self-Portrait.
You take a longish test, then you find your dominant personality styles among 14 types. Most people are mixed. It explained *so much* to me, not only about me, but about why I couldn't get along with my mom, why I broke up with my boyfriend even though we'd been very good friends, etc.
I got my first copy my senior year of high school and gave the test to *everybody*! :-)
