Hi I'm writing a book and it's about these two gangs, and I need to know what area does someone need to get punched or kicked so that he is permanently not able to speak? Is it the vocal chords or is there a special name for the correct muscle and is it possible to just not be able to talk for a while? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

If you want a character not be able to speak permanently, why not just write that after a melee the character was punched and accidentally... so, so "bit his tounge." I don't think there is an area one could punch to damage permanently one's vocal chords.
As regards "not being able to talk for a while," you could write that after being punched the victim suffered a head injury. As a result was in a catatonic stage or whatever that made him unable to speak for so a time.

Good luck and Take care.

Well u could make someone hit his left solarplex and dat would cuz pain enough that he couldnt talk for a min then could kneed in the throat. For a good book, dont only use punches and kicking try using elbows, knees, stuff like dat. Also, make the characters hit other characters in the temples, groins, jaw, nose, solarplexes, stuff like dat to make it seem more real

How about:
Prior to (beat up gang member's name)'s repeated strikes to the head he had never heard of the Broca's area of the brain. Since the swelling to the left hemisphere left him permanently disabled, he wouldn't be able to explain it to anyone. The ability to vocalize thoughts would forever elude him.

Hope this helps.

well, a blow to the trachea or voice box (larynx) should do it. if bruised heavily, it would make speech painful. if they were swollen, i imagine speech would also be hard.
