What you want to do is change the player's storage path to the external drive, not move the player itself.

Generally it's a bad idea to install programs on a removable drive. When a program is installed it creates Windows Registry entries containing the paths to the various files of the program. If that path goes away, you get (as you said) "all sorts of trouble."

What player is this?

You have to install the program on the external drive. Then use your program to transfer the files

Well just make sure that the application you are installing is a standalone application have don't have registry entry, then it'll be ok. during installation, specify the file to be installed onto your external drive location.
