it must be to boldly go where we haven't been before, you know... seek out new life, new civilizations, new untapped oil fields, cheap restaurants, etc.

I think we are here because it gives us a chance to grow and evolve by dealing with the trials we face as humans. Why else would every one of us be given parents who inevitably create challenges in us that often take a lifetime to overcome. If we were all given perfect parents who had all the answers and were surrounded by people who were like them we would have no struggle to make us strong and to force us to contemplate questions like "Why are we all here?"
If a butterfly does not go through the struggle of fighting its way out of its cocoon, it will not be strong enough to stretch its wings and fly!

You placed this question in Other - Society & Culture, interesting. Well, I'd say it was to understand other cultures and societies. Stop killing each other long enough to understand we are one family, with the same needs. Care for the children, care for the elderly. Progress to our communal human next level, not leaving any behind. Find a way to reduce the haves and have nots to one group of common compassion.
(I wish I was a smart ***- I could really end this better being funny, oh well.)

We all need to take the time to stop & smell the roses once in awhile, you know?
There is beauty, humor, friendships, peace, love, and happiness all around us, if we just take the time to notice it.
