My grandson, age 5, suffers from ADHD. He has undergone some rehabilitation and I want to provide him schooling in a regular school, either private or public. I want him to be brought on to the mainstream education. Can anyone suggest a suitable school in California.

Start at your grandson's local school district. Call them and tell them about your grandson, what his needs are, what your concerns are, etc. The district administrators are responsible for seeing that your grandchild receives an appropriate education. Chances are that if his only learning problems are directly related to ADHD, he will be able to benefit from the regular kindergarten class, with perhaps some additional support to address his behaviors and attention span.

All schools in the state of CA are required to provide Free Access to Public Education according to the government mandate IDEA. Start with your local school district and go from there. If you feel that the childs ADHD would hinder his academic development immediately request that the child be tested for special education (once you submit a written request the district has 45 days to have that student tested and hold an IEP or Individual Education Plan meeting)

I caution you on getting the child tested so young, I would wait until the 2nd grade and allow for his cognative abilities a chance to grow and develop.

Good Luck,

I am not sure about the California, but you can start out by looking for the public schools in your district, and find out which ones specialize with ADHD children, they may classify him as special ed, but sometimes that is not the case, most ADHD children are normal and can learn in any school, if yopu feel he is ready for a regular schoold, and do not agree he should be in a special ed class, then do not let the district place him there, for for equal education also check out charter school( charter schools are public schools but they are not under the public school system, they teach their own cirriculum, very much like private., without the tutuion). Some are good, some are not .

If you are currently in Calif., contact your local school district. If you request an evaluation for services, they have to assess your grandson. ADHD doesn't immediately qualify him for services in CA, but he CAN receive a 504 Plan (this can help with the specific needs he may have related to his ADHD). ADHD is currently under the "other health impaired" category, as it poses some unique challenges to the child with regards to learning and attending in school. All public schools have to serve your grandson... it doesn't have to be a specific school for children with disabilities (and if you want FREE, the school district would rather you go with one of their classes than having to pay a higher rate for a private school setting). So, start with the school district in the area where you live. They will be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck!

I used to bypass to a private Catholic college, yet i became no longer getting an exceedingly sturdy coaching. It became also a pair thousand money a three hundred and sixty 5 days. Now i bypass to a public college, that is volume 2 in the state (Oklahoma) and there is about one hundred-one hundred twenty scholars in holding with grade, even with the undeniable fact that that is seen to be a richer college. the major aspect is look at the try rankings and the p.c. of scholars that bypass on to varsity. positive, there are going to be some drug issues, yet there'll continuously be fairly sturdy human beings too. If there are problems with the universal public colleges on your section like severe gang events or undesirable try rankings, i might want to represent deepest college. If there's a strong public college in the area, which will be more desirable helpful.

I don't really think that ADHD is mentally disabled and he should go into his local school. You should call your local school board, or just go to the school in his neighbor hood.
It is not like it was several years ago. Having ADHD he may have some learning disabilities, but with all the new meds out there, mainstreaming should not bea problem.

i think if you put him in public school it would be best i think regular public school cause they have special classes and he wont be away from his family as much and around children with out problems and it may influence him a little more. cause at special schools they him treat him special and they dont do anything on their own and there for when they have no one to take care of them they dont know what to do so any public school would be good for him!
