Here're some options to travel out of Singapore if you don't like to fly.

To go to Malaysia:
1. Johor Bahru - you can catch a cab or an express coach from Queen Street, Singapore. Express Coach costs less than S$3. Not sure how much a cab costs as I've never tried it yet.

2. Kuala Lumpur (KL) - you have a few options:
a. Take a coach from Singapore. Costs less than S$30 and travel time is about 4-5 hours.
b. Take a train from Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, Singapore. I would suggest you take the night train and book the sleeping birth. 1st class is about S$100 per bed, 2nd class is S$40 per bed. Train departs Singapore at about 10.15pm and you reach KL Sentral about 6am. You'll be fresh to do your sightseeing.

3. Penang - take a coach from Singapore, costs around S$40. Departs Singapore at about 10pm, you reach Penang latest 8am. Or, you can take the night train from Singapore - KL, do a bit of shopping/sightseeing, take another night train from KL-Butterworth (Penang).

From Malaysia, you can make your way to Thailand via the Oriental Express. Not sure about the fares as I have not tried them yet.

Also, from Singapore, you can take a ferry to Indonesia's islands of Batam or Bintan from Tanah Merah Ferry terminal or Harbourfront ferry terminal. Travel time is about an hour. Not sure about the fares though.

You can buy a bus ticket to the capital of Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) for about Singapore$20 or S$25. After Malaysia, you can take another bus up to Thailand (Haatyai) for maybe another S$30.

A hotel in Malaysia can cost anywhere from S$40 a night to S$250 a night. While in Thailand, hotels can cost from S$25 a night to S$220 a night.

Have fun, its a nice region to travel at, but while in KL, try not to carry any jewelery or valuable items on you. Keep some spare cash in your shoes or other hidden places. Security is somewhat of a concern in the big city.

Malaysia has quite a lot of attractions to offer, depending on what your interests are.If you dont like plane rides, you can always take the train/car up to Thailand from Malaysia thereafter. Of course, everything depends on how much time you have actually got to travel..and again, what exactly your travel interests are. Hard to list down places to go unless you are more specific.

Other non -Singaporean places which might interest you are Bintan or Batam, both which are accessible by ferry from Singapore.

Take the Bus. The "NICE" bus from Plusliner company is very comfortable, and it starts from that Hotel near Farrer Road ( Forgot the name ), and stops at the Old Train Station in Kuala Lumpur not the Pudu Bus station which is usually jammed with cars and packed with people. This company also has Bus trips to Thailand, Penang and the East Coast.

If you have SG300 you can go two way, have a few small meals and with extras for sharkhead cabs who will burn a hole in your pocket the moment they know you are a tourist. Hotel included if you don't mind backpacker inns. Assuming you ain't a shopper till you dropper... that figure should last you about 3 days as a budget tourist in Kuala Lumpur.

I dislike planes myself=)
Take the train. It's priced at RM 100 for 1st class, request for a sleeping berth.
Everything else in Malaysia overall is affordable but a word of caution though cabbies here are like "crocodiles" or "sharks" as they will suck you dry of your pockets.
As to your next destination, head on to Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, or even Brunei.

Definitely, just cross the Causeway and you're in Johor Bahru. Head for City Square if you're into shopping or visit terbrau market for great chinese food.
You can also get to Thailand from Singapore in a bus. Rates should be pretty affordable

Of course you can go to Malaysia from Singapore. What kinda places do you like to visit. They have city areas like Kuala Lumpur, to beach resorts like Redang & Cherating, or even great eating places in Malacca, Penang. Or you can even take a ride to Hatyai, near Thailand.

i'm from KL and when i visit singapore, i always prefer KTM. from kl, it costs approx RM37/way. so i'd budget RM80 for the fare...in case of tax and etc etc (that might be around S$ 40 for you). the train lands right in KL Sentral. there are 4 train lines running through that place. all you have to do is ask the info centre where you want to go and you have access to virtually every major location in kl. try stopping by Sungai Wang mall if you are on a budget holiday. it's right on Bukit Bintang and you can do some nice shopping without having to fork out much.

You can take a public bus to Johor Bahru from Woodlands, and also take a coach from Singapore to Malaysia. You can even travel up to Thailand from Malaysia. Just check it out at any travel agencies.
