They would be considered blue collar workers - it used to be easier to define the difference than it is today - because white collar workers are those who have to have degrees higher than collegiate level. This means some teachers are actually blue collar workers, but my mother is required to have a master's degree in order to do her job within the school district so she would officially be a white collar worker, but because she's in a school district she still falls in as a blue collar worker. At one time you could base it on economic wages - or unless they were union workers, so time has altered its meaning many times, and like a lot of "labels" it is really more an ideal than a practical definition. Nurses are blue collar, but doctors are white collar. Lawyers are white collar and so are insurance and fianance related fields - education, factory, information service up to mid-management levels are blue collar, upper level management and CEO is while collar. So you can see that it's more of a perception than something with a concrete basis.

I was tempted to say if they are wearing a blue shirt they would be blue collared and if wearing a white shirt they would be white collared, but that would be unfair to you. You seem very nice and deserving of a proper response, unfortunately I do not have one.

I would say it depends on the job they do in the force.

For instance, any guy who spends most of his time driving around in a patrol car in certainly blue collar.

However, a homicide detective who has to do a lot of research would be more white collar.
