for females (the shot) in high school. people are so concerned with vaccinations (cant go to most schools without them!), vitamins, flu shots, sunscreens, bug repellant- for most parents these are essential!!!! so why arent we protecting our daughters from a mistake like an unwanted pregnancy- kids shouldnt have to be in the position to decide on parenthood-- WE should decide this for them and - schools should require this pregnancy prevention documentation as admissions the same as vaccinations- this should also be used with welfare recipients as well

this is exactly what is wrong with this country! when there is a vaccine agaisnt aids- will you not give it to your children??!! of course you will--- but with your logic- youd rather just teach them about abstaining from sex and dirty needles-- of course still teach them everything about sex--but they are kids- they are still young and stupid and mistakes happen- this is an area where we are not providing the appropriate fail-safe-- we just offer these kids with kids welfare more and more welfare for more and more kids

This country is in desperate need of a Department Of Reproduction. With so many minors and morons recklessly pumping out kids, I firmly believe that reproduction should be licensed and regulated. Of course it'll never happen...people would start a civil war over their right to recklessly overpopulate.

Becoming pregnant is often the least of problems that can occur when kids are having sex. There are so many STD's and almost none of them with vaccines, it's ridiculous to think that preventing pregnancy is the most important thing. Not to mention birth control has a lot of side effects, especially the shot like osteoporosis, stroke, or permanent infertility. Ultimately we need to teach our kids not to be having sex until they are married, but understand that some of them are going to make mistakes.

Well, to start with, many people have problems with hormonal birth control.

Secondly, children who don't have vaccinations can be admitted into public school, they simply have to get a waiver from the state education department.

As a parent of a daughter, I'd prefer to decide to teach her empowerment over her own body and teach her the ways to make the best informed decisions about what happens to her body. I simply have to trust that I've done the best I could.

As for the welfare thing? Wow, just wow. That's some hate there.

I agree totally that welfare recipients should be put on mandatory birth control, because when they aren't its our tax dollars that are paying for their babies.

However, I do not feel that any teenager should be forced to be on birth control. That's basically telling your child that it is ok to go out and and have sex, because at that age, they aren't afraid of std's their only afraid of getting pregnant, and you've just taken care of that problem. So now you won't have any babies, but you'll probably have a whole school full of STD's.

Many females have problems with the shot - what about the ones that get sick from it.. and putting all girls on birth control is like telling the guys that making sure they are protected isnt their problem - because, once again, at that age, they don't care about std's, just babies. In fact, they care so little about STD's that most teenagers do not realize you can get them from oral sex too. So, since they are so uneducated, lets give them the pill and tell them to go off and have sex!!

My mom talked to me about why not to have sex.. and you know what.. I didn't. If you teach your child the importance of not having sex, and make sure they know the consequences if they do, they will be less likely to do it. BTW, all of my high school friends were virgins too.

The bigger problem is that there are no consequences anymore. Girls get pregnant and mommy and daddy take care of baby while the girl goes out and has fun with her friends. My friend got pregant just out of high school and her parents gave her an ultimatum.. get a full time job and an apartment of your own, or stay here and put the baby up for adoption.. and she chose the second because she wasn't mature enough for the responsibility. More parents need to be like this.

And you know, no birth control is 100% effective... but teenagers don't care about that.

When my daughters were 13 I talked to them about having sex and the possiblities of pregnancy. I also took my daughters to the doctor and put them on birth control. I think that all girls from the age of 13 or so, depending on their maturity, should know about birth control and not feel like its a big secret that they cant talk to their parents about.
If mandatory birth control was in the schools, I think some parents would not approve. Some religions do not accept birth contol, so to make it mandatory could step on some peoples toes.
I guess it should be up to the parent and child not the school system.

i agree completely, but unfortunately the right to reproduce, at any age or income level, is one of our God given rights. even though it's a good idea, how would you feel if one day someone showed up at your door and told you that because you fall under some predetermined government category, that they were taking away your reproductive right? I work a full time job and because of limited paying jobs in the area, I still only made $15,000 last year. Without my husband I wouldn't be able to afford to raise my son. However, my income should not be the determining factor if I can have children or not. welfare reform is a much better solution.

You have got to be the most closed minded individual I've ever come across. You only see things they way you want to see them. All the answers are so simple for you! You don't consider the fact that some people are of different religions and backgrounds. Do you want people to give up their faith and get this birth control just to make you happy? Have you ever read the book Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell? You would have fit in so well in that society. Just control everybody, don't ever let any one have a single free thought or opinion, just do as you say and that's all. You make me sick.

We need to be raising our daughters on the right path and teaching them that sex is a valuable and precious thing to be saved until marriage. If we would just refocus on to the guidelines set by the Bible then we would not have as much need for the government and others trying to get control into our lives and our children's lives. We need to step up as parents and reestablish boundaries, discipline and love to our children. It starts at home, this is our job as parents ordained by God to raise our children in the fear and admonition of Him. This is not the responsibility of the public school or anyone else to "protect" our children.

Even though it sounds practical, it wouldn't be a good idea. It would just make teens think "Oh, I'm on the pill I can't get pregnant so what
i do doesn't matter." It would only make teens want to have sex more. Believe me, I'm 13 and thats the first thing I thought of.

Hear Hear Lee-anne! That' a slippery slope you don't want to tread upon... Don't even go there! Forget about it. (Hitler, indeed...)

I also feel that the birth control pill is very bad for one's health and if I was forced to take it I would consider this tantamount to rape. (An extreme violation of the control of my body.) Go think about that...
